A nationwide campaign has been launched to re-create a green Bahrain, once known as the land of a million palm trees. Plans include creating 50,000sqm of greenery a year, fed through new irrigation systems, using treated sewage water.
Natural wells will be revived, new parks built and the country's beaches expanded by two per cent nationwide, Municipalities and Agriculture Minister Mansoor bin Rajab announced yesterday.
Each of the five governorates will also have its own central park and junctions throughout the country will be "greened", he said.
Farmers are also to get more help with better services from the ministry, said Mr Bin Rajab.
"These services include methods on preparing land for agricultural projects, consultations, awareness campaigns, plant protection and irrigation," he said.
"The ministry also aims to improve the living environment of residents through a Towns and Villages Development project, which will offer them construction aid under certain criteria."
Mr Bin Rajab said it was hoped to offer the service to 3,000 Bahraini families a year.
